felting again

Remember when I tried to felt slippers and failed fantastically? Well, it is high time for another attempt! I am going to make a pair of felted clogs (pattern available for download from Fiber Trends), and this time I was very careful when purchasing the yarn. Passing by perfectly sound wool skeins, I bought the yarn that said in big, bold letters: PERFECT FOR FELTING. I've knit the first slipper, and it's HUGE. This is an actual size picture of me with the un-felted slipper. I've just got to finish up the other one, stuff them in my washing machine, and I'll let you know how they come out! Fingers crossed my whales turn out like slippers somehow.

I have another winter knit to share with you today. This one made from the Norwegian Star Earflap Hat (available as a free download on Ravelry), but I knit it backwards; from the top down. I started with DP4s and switched to a C5 once the crown was completed, (Thorpe is a good pattern for this) then knit the snow pattern, added a garter st brim and, for the finishing touch, a crochet border with a half double crochet stitch on 6s.

atherton scarf

It's officially winter here in Colorado!

We had the first snow today. It's time to break out the boots and coats and mittens and hats and scarves. It is a knitters dreamy winter wonderland today. So I thought I would share with you my first scarf of the season; the Asherton Reversible Scarf.

I made it on smaller needles than the pattern (6s) and added an extra pattern repeat for a total of 52 sts. It is a lovely pattern that comes out beautiful on both sides! This will be gifted to my Grandpa come Christmas.

I love the look of this hat, and it's unique construction makes it so much fun to knit! But if you recall, the last time I made it, it didn't come out right at all- it was so large that I could only do 3 pattern repeats to make it fit a head, and then when I sewed the ends together it looked rather pointy. I did some searching around, and on Ravelry I found my answer: a brilliant knitter had done the math and come up with the Tychus Formula to calculate the cast on and row counts! Fantastic! So, there is the secret to this hat, do enjoy.
