It's been raining here, dreary and cloudy days. After work, the perfect companion to dinner and a glass of wine is Dr. Who. We're obsessive watchers and we've recently reached Season 5. Oh how I wish I could wrap myself in something warmer on the inside! Someday, I will bring myself to buy the yarn and commit to the making of my own Tardis, as the now famous Ms. Carina invented on her own needles:

rogue knits

A recent knit occurrence in my very own town brought to my attention a facet of this craft I'd never seen before: YarnBombing.

Using knitted and crochet items, the yarn pirates graffiti urban items. Above, the Ladies Fancy Work Society fit up a giant bear statue with a ball and chain, in a piece they called "slave to the craft". Read more about it here. And it's happening all over... from trees and signposts, to statues, and knit shoes hanging on the telephone wire, an entire blog dedicated to the craft!

Knitting has become a generational movement! No longer private, or secluded, or even personal, it's a shared art designed to make public spaces more colorful, warm, and fun.

So, what say you? Would you join a local guild of the pirate art of yarnbombing?

propeller hat

for William, who is 1 year old.

This weekend I attended a one year old's Dr. Seuss themed birthday party, and brought this as my gift.

The pattern I used was much more difficult than it really needed to be. Here is what I did instead:

Make the hat:

• Make a baby sized stockinette st hat. For a 1 year old (19 in cir), size 8 needles, CO 76.
• Change color every inch or so, I did every 5 rows: yellow, dark blue, light blue, red.
• Decrease to make crown after 7in (place marker every 6 and k2tog before each, every other row, until 8 are left, pull yarn thru)

Make propeller:

• With contrasting yarn held double, (I used white), PU 3 sts at top of hat.
• Knit in I-cord for 1 inch
• CO 3 sts, knit across all st, CO 3 more.
• Knit across all sts (x2)
• BO all sts.
• Fold over the flat knitted section lengthwise and sew into place. It also helps to pull the yarn thru the center of the icord to make the propeller pinch in the middle a bit.
